3-D Tour of a "Landmark of Innovative Design"
Explore the Chet Holifield Federal Building (1971) with this narrated virtual tour, created with LIDAR technology. In addition to showing every angle of the expansive exterior, you’ll see inside the historic, intact lobby and watch short interviews with historian Alan Hess addressing Laguna Niguel’s ranching past, the turning point that the Holifield building represents, and the significance of architect William Pereira. The tour was created by CyArk, a non-profit organization with a mission to expand access to cultural heritage.
Why a Virtual Tour?
The federal government agency that stewards the building, the General Services Administration, is selling it. Because the building qualifies for listing on the National Register of Historic Places, the impact of the decision to sell on the building’s historic integrity had to be reviewed by the State Office of Historic Preservation, the federal Advisory Council on Historic Preservation and consulting parties such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Preserve Orange County. The review culminated in an agreement between GSA and the parties that includes, among its obligations, that the GSA document and interpret the building.
